Has anyone ever died on the Stratosphere in Las Vegas?
September 28th, 2009
I’m going to Las Vegas with my family next year and I want to try the roller coasters. I love roller coasters, except when there 1,000 feet above the ground and have no floor under them. Has anything life-threatening gone wrong with them? Has anyone ever died on them?
There is no roller coaster at Stratosphere anymore, but there are 3 pretty intense rides up there. They did have issues with two of the rides malfunctioning. One was designed to shut down in high winds, but didn’t return to the tower first. So some people were stranded over the edge of the tower for over an hour. Another time, there was a power outage, and riders were left hanging over the edge again, on a different ride. As best I know, both of those were about 4 yrs ago – I don’t know of any issues since. But I do remember that the hotel didn’t handle it well at all.

I haven’t heard of anyone dying on them but I heard something really scary happened a few years ago…There was a huge blackout on the Strip and the surrounding area and it happened while people were riding on the roller coasters. Apparently they were stuck for a really really really long time.
I love roller coasters but I will not ride one in Vegas because of things like what happened during that blackout. Those rides are crazy and the worst thing is to be stuck there, upside down with blood rushing to your head! Also when things like that happen, there’s so automatic thing that stops the ride and releases it back to its starting point. Elevators don’t and should, as well as thrill rides…they should but they don’t. This was a huge discussion in my law classes because of the liabilities. Have fun but be smart about it.

Stratosphere no longer has the roller coaster.
They have 3 other rides: Big Shot, X Scream, and Insanity.
Sahara and NY NY still have roller coasters. And maybe Adventuredome at Circus Circus.

No one ever died on the rides. The roller coaster was removed some time back. The fire department ordered it as they had to make too many resuces when the wheels got stuck.
The safety record is near perfect there. Do not fear a life ending event.

The ride (it isn’t a ‘roller coaster’ as the others mentioned.) malfunctions on the Stratosphere happened on two separate occasions. Both of them were due to the ride stopping yet the manager refused to apologize and was an absolute ass when the media asked him about it. The Stratosphere is known for having poor management and I would not ride the rides even for free.
