Has anyone stayed at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas recently?

If you have stayed at the Riviera Hotel recently in Las Vegas, please tell me what to expect. The only reviews I can find are old. Thanks.

The Riviera has undergone an extensive rennovation in the last couple of years. Many if not all of the rooms now feature plump duvet type bedding and LCD tvs and new carpet. Most rooms now have clock radios with Ipod docking stations. There is brand new carpet throughout the casino and a really nice new Sportsbook.

Keep in mind it is an older property , so rooms may be smaller than these new suite-type mega hotels. The Riviera is NOT the Bellagio, nor the Wynn, nor the Venetian. However, if you are looking for a smaller atmosphere and less snooty wannabe crowds, the Riviera is a more down to earth place and easier to navigate. It is far from being a dive hotel that some travelers make it out to be.

I have never stayed there but I love playing poker there and love the cozy casino. I don’t like the snooty casinos on the southern end of the strip where the "lose your mind in 3 days" tourists stay. I like to be relaxed and stay for a week which is probably too long for 90% of Vegas tourists.

There are four towers, all built during different expansions. The nicest and newest rooms are in the Monaco and Mediterranean South towers. They are larger and many have refrigerators (Monaco also has floor safes for an extra fee). They have granite, flat-panel TVs and ipod docks along with better furnishings. They cost a bit more, too. Older, but decent rooms can be found in the Monte Carlo tower. They still have flat panel TVs and refrigerators. The cheapest rooms are the oldest, and they are in the Mediterranean North and San Remo towers. The Mediterranean rooms are right over the casino, if you like a short walk. The San Remo rooms overlook the pool. They are from a time when overlooking the pool was best, because there wasn’t much to see on the Strip.

This is an old hotel well past its glory days. It is also not in a convenient spot and it is not directly served by the Monorail. This hotel is Ok as a place to sleep but not very nice otherwise. The newer hotels are much nicer. Most to the reviews are old because this hotel is old. There isn’t much else to say about it. Even the swimming pool is just a rectangle in the ground. In a word the Riviera is adequate.

I included a map of the Strip for you. As you can see, there is no monorail stop at the Riviera and it is not really near anything worth seeing. The Riviera is on the North East of the Strip and that is nowhere near the action. By the way, a small correction to the map. The free tram between Monte Carlo and Bellagio is not there now due to the Cities Center construction project.
