Grand Canyon Holiday? Transport from Las Vegas?

Hi Everyone :)

My boyfriend and I are wanting to go to Las Vegas in October as a belated Graduation and 21st birthday present to ourselves (we will both be 21 in July/August). However, I desperately want to go to the Grand Canyon as well, but I’m having trouble trying to organise it.

Ideally, we’d like to spend at least 6 days in Vegas and then a few in the Grand Canyon. I’ve looked at Virgin Holidays, and they offer some great tours – but you have to drive…

Whilst I can drive, my boyfriend can’t, and I’d MUCH prefer to not have to drive. I’ve only been driving a few months and I’ve never been this far away from home before! So, I’m too nervous to do it.

The public transport seems to be either non-existant, or very long/expensive.

Does anyone know of any good tours/travel companies, or do you have an experience of a Las Vegas/Grand Canyon holiday?

Just any advice on how I could organise this would be greatly appreciated :D

Thanks,

Lucy

P.S. Plus any tips of places I *have* to see?

I highly recommend you take a bus tour to the Grand Canyon South Rim. It’s 5.5 hours from Las Vegas and worth every minute. Count on spending an entire day doing this trip, leaving the hotel around 7a. and returning to LV at 9p. Depending on the operator, you’ll get three hours at the Rim, which is plenty of time to see Mather Point, Yaki Point, Hermit’s Rest, and Yavapai Observation Station. Alternatively, there’s the West Rim of the Canyon, which features the Skywalk. It’s at this Rim that you can book a helicopter to take you to the bottom. There’s also helicopter flights at the South Rim, but they don’t touch down at the bottom. Here’s a link for helicopter reviews:

    try this site.
vegas.com and link to grand canyon tours.
I live here and see the tour buses taking people on this trip many times a day.
plan some time for the trip, however. Two or more days.

You have many options going to the Grand Canyon. On the following page several are listed at the bottom of the page. Clicking on it will take you to a lot more choices. You must realize it is a very long drive from Vegas to the canyon.

Then for things you must see and do when in Vegas, go to this page and you will find a list of things. The list is in order from Mandalay Bay, north along the strip. The things are either free or not expensive and worth the cost. Since you are coming during the hottest months you better read the "tips" page to help you prepare for you visit. These tips will make your stay more pleasurable with one very important thing to remember …. water.

If you want to see the real Grand Canyon go to the South Rim of the park. The part of the GC that is most advertised, is on an Indian Reservation at the extreme West of the canyon. There are really lots of places that you can see easily on way to the South Rim so it is worth the drive besides it will be much less expensive. Some places that you will see include: Lake Mead http://vegasnature.com/LakeMead.htm Hoover Dam http://vegasnature.com/HooverDam.htm Colorado River http://vegasnature.com/ColoradoRiver.htm Oatman http://vegasnature.com/Oatman.htm Grand Canyon http://vegasnature.com/GrandCanyon.htm on the way back stop in Laughlin http://vegasnature.com/Laughlin.htm http://www.vegasnature.com/ has videos of each area followed by maps showing how to get there. You may want to email their trip adviser also.

There are bus tours that will take you to Grand Canyon, even allow you to stay overnight. You can take the Greyhound bus line to Williams AZ then there is a train that goes to GC (tourist thing not cheap).

There are several choices getting to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. You can take a bus tour to the south rim, it takes 13 hours or so round trip with stops along the rim. You can take a helicopter tour that will cost you around $300 per person. There are so many choices, check out this website for more options: http://grandcanyontourcompany.com/ By the way in my opinion you’ll want to avoid the tours to the west rim.

I’m one of those people that doesn’t play tourist well at all so when I visit places I tend to do things my own way and at my own pace.
    From Las Vegas to GCNP
    1) Book a hotel room in the Park for a couple of nights
    http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/lodging-overview-627788750-411.html
    2) Take Greyhound Bus from Las Vegas to Flagstaff> not Williams as another poster suggested
    3) Take the Arizona Shuttle from Flagstaff to GCNP
    http://www.arizonashuttle.com/flagstaff-schedule
Just so you know 1: the distance from the Greyhound terminal to the Amtrak station in Flag is less than a mile >so it’s an inexpensive cab ride
If you want to walk it take it slow b/c you will be at 7000′
    Just so you know 2
Flagstaff itself is a cool town to explore and then spend a night in Just do yourself a favor and don’t get something that’s within .5 mi of the train tracks
Anything on S.Miltion between I-40 and the Greyhound station will work

Just went to Grand Canyon in March and its really nice. Try Pink Jeep Tours for transportation. If you really want to see something beautiful with lots of hiking available, try Zion National Park in Utah or Valley of Fire in Nevada. Have fun!
