Las Vegas Holiday !

I am traveling to las vegas this weekend and I have always stayed at the MGM. I was considering saving some money and staying at the stratosphere. Will the amount of money I spend on cab fares to get to the main part of the strip outweigh the money saved with staying at the stratosphere? Basically trying to be economical but if I am not really going to save money I will probably stay at the MGM. Thanks for any help!

You can still save money without having to worry about transportation. the cheapest fare for Stratosphere that I see from Fri-Sun is $244.82 for 2 nights. That is more than $100/night.

Excalibur is located across from MGM Grand, so you will be in the same location and the total price for a standard room for Fri and Sat night is $282.31, which is only $40 more than Stratosphere.

But if you want to stick to Stratosphere, you can either use the "Deuce" and pay $5 for an all-day pass to go up and down the strip, or you can walk to Sahara and use their Monorail station for transportation. 3 days on the bus is $15, 3 days on the monorail is $28.

It’s 3.87 miles from the Stratosphere to Luxor. I don’t know about you but I walk/jog on a treadmill and 3mph is walking & 3.5mph is walking very fast. The sidewalks along LV Blvd S are generally pretty crowded, and there are cross walks, pedestrian bridges and stop lights etc along the way. It would take you 1 hour and 20 minutes if you "could" average 3mph which I highly doubt. IMO it’s going to take at least an hour and 1/2.

Yes, you can use each to ride the other, with CAT pass they just charge you an extra .50c the first time you ride the Deuce and then they give you another 24hr pass.

It is most certainly NOT a 5-10 minute walk. Its is more like 1.5-2 miles and those arent easy miles. It is over 100 degrees and feels like more surrounded by concrete. The heat comes off the pavement and almost burns the back of your legs. Also, the street in front of TI and Mirage can be slow going at busy times which won’t make it any quicker or cooler.

I would suggest an alternate mode of transport to walking. You can take the "Duece" double-decker bus that runs the strip and stops at both places. A cab from one to another or the monorail from the Sahara, which IS a 10 minute walk from the Strat, to Flamingo which is across the strip from Caesars.

NEVER stay at the stratosphere!! While building the final top part, there was a fire. There isn’t a hose in the valley long enough to reach the top. They had to let it burn until other means were untilized. It took 2 hours for a helicopter to come and dump water on it. A couple years ago, there was a mild fire. The fire department reported only about 25% of the sprinklers inside the building properly worked.
Kinda scary!

I’m going to Las Vegas with my family next year and I want to try the roller coasters. I love roller coasters, except when there 1,000 feet above the ground and have no floor under them. Has anything life-threatening gone wrong with them? Has anyone ever died on them?

There is no roller coaster at Stratosphere anymore, but there are 3 pretty intense rides up there. They did have issues with two of the rides malfunctioning. One was designed to shut down in high winds, but didn’t return to the tower first. So some people were stranded over the edge of the tower for over an hour. Another time, there was a power outage, and riders were left hanging over the edge again, on a different ride. As best I know, both of those were about 4 yrs ago – I don’t know of any issues since. But I do remember that the hotel didn’t handle it well at all.
