A New Collection: Catalogs

Collectors come in all shapes and sizes. Young and old people alike have collections that range from comic books, angel figurines, action figures, antique vases, old coins, paper money from all over the world, trading cards and the like. If you like those direct mail catalogs that you often receive in the mail, would you like to start a collection of different kinds of catalogs from all over the world? Just make a request for those free catalogs from international companies and they will be more than willing to add you to their catalog mailing list.

You can actually learn a lot of catalogs. It is not just about the company, their products and their descriptions as well as the prices, it is the knowledge that you gain from reading these printed materials. You see, there are so many innovations in the world that you do not know yet and the best source for information about these new developments are the products catalogs published by the companies that made them.

So if you want to start a collection of catalogs, not really because of their monetary value when they become a vintage but for the knowledge that it can give you, how do you source them out? There are actually two ways to get hold of these informative catalogs.

Online Mailing List Subscription
You can search online and look for companies whose products you are interested in. Like for example, you want to learn more about innovations in farming equipment and machineries. Type the keywords in your search engine. It will come up with a list of the most popular companies that sell these products. You can check several sites and when you encounter something new being offered by a certain company, you can request for them to send you their most recent catalog. You can do this online or by calling their toll free number. If it is an international company then your best option is to do it online, either by filling up an online form or by sending them an email request.

Trade Fair Giveaways
Companies with new offerings often join trade fairs in order for them to showcase their innovations. For example, companies that manufacture industrial grade ovens would join bakery trade fairs so that they can let their target market, which are the bakers and bakery owners, know that they have new products. But even in these events, other companies related or not related to baking usually attend just to make their products known. These companies could be offering packaging options, mechanized systems, printing solutions, and many other things. And when they join these trade shows, these participating companies really prepare comprehensive catalogs about their company and products. You could collect so many catalogs about different products and companies in just a single visit to a trade fair. You could have enough to read for a week.

What to Do with Your Collection
You can read them all and learn new things. You can also share the insights that you learned to your friends who need such information. Or you can start a blog about direct mail catalogs. That would be a unique niche for your weblog. There are so many things that you can do with your catalog mailing collection. Who knows, you might need them for the company that you will start in the future.

I have found four web sites referring to the 1954 television production of Casino Royale. Two state that Bond is portrayed by Barry Sullivan and two others state Barry Nelson. I hear that latest DVD for the Peter Sellers version includes the teleplay as a bonus feature. Can anyone out there settle this little mystery for me?

Nelson. Barry Nelson.

On “Taxman” by the Beatles, does McCartney use a Fender Esquire or a Epiphone Casino?

I know both were used for recording around this time and I’ve read conflicting reports on what was used on that solo, but I’m curious if anyone knows for sure which guitar was used.

He used his brand new Epiphone Casino at the time and this convinced John and George to get theirs! Im also awaiting mine!

Grassroots Innovation – Garlic Peeling Machine

Garlic is an important ingredient in making pickles. Recent trends have shown a good growth in the pickle manufacturing and other related food processing industry in India which means a greater demand of garlic in the industry. Leaving aside a few big players, the pickle manufactures comes under small scale or cottage industries and garlic is generally peeled manually which leads to wastage and is also a time consuming affair. It reduces the productivity, efficiency and competitiveness of the Indian pickles industry. Mr. M. Nagarajan of Tamil Nadu, India has invented a garlic peeling machine to overcome the problems of peeling off garlic manually and give a boost to the pickle and allied food processing industry of India.

Features and advantages of garlic peeling machine

This garlic peeling machine working principle is based on the concept of friction. The machine consists of a feeding mechanism, a peeling chamber, an aspiration system and a dust collection box. The feeding mechanism uses a conical hopper through which garlic is fed. In the peeling chamber which is steel drum and contains moving shaft with rubber pads attached on it. Garlic gets peeled off after getting rubbed against rubber pads and also among themselves. The aspiration system is meant for separating the dust of peeled off skin from garlic and it uses the blowing mechanism for that. The blown dust is collected in the dust collection box.

The machine can peel garlic at the rate 250-300 Kg/hr with 100% yield and it requires just a single person to operate it.

At the cost of Rs. 100,000, the machine not only provides a low initial investment opportunity but also has low operational cost as it consumes less electricity.

Support and recognition of the grassroots innovation

National Innovation Foundation (NIF) a nonprofit autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology has recognized and supported Nagarajan’s garlic peeler. It has also awarded the grassroots innovation in its biennial competition for unaided green grassroots innovation and traditional knowledge. NIF has supported it in making it a commercial success and Mr. Nagarajan has started producing this machine in his own venture Virgo Engineering Works.

About the Author

Ashish Kumar is a student at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. He likes to write articles on grassroots innovation and other related topics.

Family vacations can be expensive, but there are plenty of free Las Vegas attractions that are interesting and exciting and will provide hours of fun for people of every age. When traveling as a family it is often challenging to find activities that everyone will enjoy, but Las Vegas offers a variety of options that will fascinate the children while also entertaining the adults. And, with so many free family-friendly events, you can have a great holiday without spending a lot of money.

  1. MGM Grand Lion Habitat. Watch these Kings of the jungle as they rest and play in their multi-level, glass sided habitat complete with waterfalls, ponds, and a see through walkway tunnel that allows for close viewing as these magnificent cats stroll and prowl overhead. The lions do not stay in their simulated jungle, but live on an 8.5 acre ranch with different groups being brought in each day, so you can visit this free attraction more than once and see something new each time. For an extra fee, you can even have your picture taken with lion cubs as a memorable souvenir.

  2. M&Ms World. Candy lovers will enjoy the four floors of confectionery heaven featuring every type of M&M merchandise imaginable. Walk through this fun and colorful store, sample tasty treats, and see how the legendary M&M characters have changed through the years. Purchase some unique souvenirs and admire a replica of the M&Ms race care driven in the NASCAR Sprint cup series. This attraction is a must see whether you are a kid, or a kid at heart.

  3. Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Cactus Garden. Continue your tour of the wonderful world of chocolate by visiting this amazing factory. Watch through large windows as fine chocolates are prepared, cooked, coated, wrapped, and packaged and listen on video monitors as the entire process is explained. End your tour with some tasty free samples, and then visit the gift shoppe to buy some more of your favorite choices that you can enjoy while wandering through the extensive 3-acre cactus gardens.

  4. Aquarium at the Silverton Hotel. The entire family will enjoy a visit to one of the world’s largest indoor aquariums. This 117,000 gallon tank features 4,000 tropical fish including stingrays, sharks, and other fascinating sea life that will captivate both young and old. 5. Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo Hotel. With its winding pathways, footbridges, waterfalls, and lush gardens, this habitat is a welcome oasis in the craziness and busyness of Las Vegas.
